Westlake Vs. Hate

In collaboration with LA Vs. Hate this initiative launched posters and signs for the community of McArthur Park/ Westlake. They have been translated in English, Zapotec and K’iche’ and free for download on the link below. This piece is a tribute to the Westlake / McArthur Park area, including motifs and historical landmarks that celebrate the resiliency of the demographic. The Levitt Pavilion has fostered countless community gatherings and supplemented the culture in many positive ways. The historical Westlake theatre building serves as a reminder of past remnants synonymous to current culture. I’ve included the swap meets many of us went to and the street vendors who resiliently make their living everyday and are a true pillar of Westlake. The Quetzal birds adorn the imagery in order to highlight the Central American & Southern Mexican communities that make up Westlake‘s identity, urging a strong sense of roots and culture that will not be forgotten. The central graphic of the monarch butterfly is a symbol that highlights resilience, continuity and migration, a practice that has happened since time immemorial.The figures in the butterfly’s wings show unity and merging of communities. Los Angeles is a multiethnic metropolis with many communities co existing with one another, visually stating we are stronger together. Lastly, the slogans surrounding the monarch reflect fundamental human rights that I believe every member of this community deserves. All the dignity and respect to street vendors who make an honest living and are criminalized for their work. Housing, healthcare and access to mental health resources belong to everyone. Strengthening and safeguarding our communities for all and the next generations to come.

Esta pieza rinde homenaje a la zona de Westlake/McArthur Park, e incluye motivos y monumentos históricos que celebran la resiliencia de este grupo demográfico. El Pabellón Levitt ha fomentado innumerables reuniones comunitarias y ha contribuido positivamente a la cultura. El histórico teatro de Westlake sirve como recordatorio de vestigios del pasado que son sinónimo de la cultura actual. He incluido los mercados de intercambio con los que muchos de nosotros crecimos y a los vendedores ambulantes que se ganan la vida día a día con resiliencia y son un verdadero pilar de Westlake. Los quetzales adornan las imágenes para destacar las comunidades centroamericanas y del sur de México que conforman la identidad de Westlake, instando a un fuerte sentido de raíces y cultura que no se olvidará. El gráfico central de la mariposa monarca es un símbolo que resalta la resiliencia, la continuidad y la migración, una práctica que ha existido desde tiempos inmemoriales. Las figuras en las alas de la mariposa representan la unidad y la fusión de las comunidades. Los Ángeles es una metrópolis multiétnica con numerosas comunidades que coexisten, lo que demuestra visualmente que juntos somos más fuertes. Por último, los lemas que rodean a la monarca reflejan los derechos humanos fundamentales que, en mi opinión, todos los miembros de esta comunidad merecen. Toda la dignidad y el respeto a los vendedores ambulantes que se ganan la vida honestamente y son criminalizados por su trabajo. La vivienda, la atención médica y el acceso a recursos de salud mental son de todos. Fortaleciendo y protegiendo nuestras comunidades para todos y para las próximas generaciones.
